My experience began working at a local pet store in my teens where I cared for and sold puppies, kittens, fish, budgies, and other pets.
From there, I went on to work at a doggie daycare where I learned about dog body language, play styles, and ensuring safe interactions.
In 2022 I started a dog walking business. I realised quickly that I could make my job a lot easier by training the dogs to walk nicely on a leash. My clients loved this and encouraged me to become a dog trainer.
I began networking with other professionals, learning about the different paths to becoming a dog trainer, and quickly found a home in force-free training. It completely transformed the way I live with and care for all the animals, and humans, in my life. Before becoming educated, my only conception of a dog trainer was someone who uses choke collars, leash corrections, and harsh commands. I was delighted to learn that you don't need to be mean to dogs to get good results. In fact, the opposite is true! I am a practical, science-minded person who likes to stay on the cutting edge of my field. I never compromise my ethics for the sake of ego.
I use welfare-centred methods backed by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. When I'm not walking and training dogs, I am providing care and enrichment for stray and homeless pets as a municipal Animal Shelter Attendant.
While I work with dogs of all varieties, I especially love herding breeds, toy breeds, and dogs who are just TOO MUCH!
I have two cavapoos (Ollie and Teddy), one black cat (Raja), and a female betta fish (Yuna).
"I believe that all dogs deserve to be free from harsh, outdated, and unethical training methods."
What if she just doesn't understand what you're asking?
What if he is trying to tell you something?
What if she is secretly in pain?
What if he is suffering from fear, anxiety, stress, or frustration?
What if all she needs is an appropriate outlet for her behaviour?
Old school, obedience-focused training only suppresses the symptoms of these problems. Modern force-free training gets to the root.
For a variety of concerns including fear, anxiety, reactivity, leash pulling, inappropriate elimination, scavenging, and more. For dogs and puppies of all ages.
Just want to talk through a concern with a professional? Book a phone Q & A for only $40.
Please note, at this time I do not treat:
Separation anxiety
Conflict between multiple pets in the home
If you are experiencing either of these issues, contact me for a trusted referral.
Each dog is unique and learns at their own pace. However, most clients see results during the first session. It also depends on how much time you have to spend working with your dog and what your goals are.
I do house calls or we can meet an agreed-upon public location.
To teach new skills, I use positive reinforcement. To reduce fear and anxiety, I use a combination of classical conditioning and social facilitation. To reduce problem behaviours, I will create a personalised plan for you that involves management, meeting needs, and setting your dog up for success. My goal is to create a safe, supportive environment for both you and your dog, ensuring long-term results.
Behaviour consulting goes beyond teaching commands. I focus on resolving underlying issues, understanding root causes, and helping you manage them effectively.
